Xanadu is a true pioneer of the Margaret River region, with a long-standing legacy of producing award-winning wines on some of the world’s oldest soil with some of the district’s oldest vines.
Founded in 1977 by Dr John Lagan, he was mystified by the site’s utopian beauty and romantically named the property Xanadu after the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. True to its poetic namesake, Xanadu is located in an idyllic setting – enjoying wonderful maritime conditions, surrounded by magnificent vineyards and breathtaking coastline in the heart of Margaret River. But Lagan was not only inspired by the site’s natural splendour, the pioneering spirit of the region also greatly inspired him. At this point in time, the prospect of Margaret River’s great winemaking potential was only just being considered. The first vines were planted in 1977, and more followed thereafter.
Today, Xanadu is one of the oldest vineyards in the Margaret River with 85 hectares now planted with key varieties including Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. Elements of vine, soil and climate combine to cultivate these beautifully expressive wines of quality and distinction. Xanadu’s warm growing seasons with cooling sea breezes create the perfect maritime climate. The ancient soils are similarly integral, brimming with gravelly or gritty sandy loam formed directly from the underlying granite rock.
Xanadu’s philosophy is strongly held on natural ideals that embody respect for the land and the fruit. Natural fermentation and non-interventional winemaking are part of the Xanadu formula. The focus is always on offering lively fruit characters with depth and precision, allowing the personality of Margaret River to shine through. Personality is always front and centre, with the upmost care being taken to neither drown wines in oak or neither to beat them into submission.
This winemaking philosophy and level dedication to the vineyards has cemented Xanadu as one of the region’s most successful show winners to date. Since 2007, Xanadu has been awarded sixty-five major show trophies and counting. Discover Xanadu’s wines, a curated selection of which are now available on Cellar Space.
