Penfolds Release 2019 Tasting Notes

August 22, 2019
Penfolds Release 2019 Tasting Notes

Penfolds Bin 51 Riesling (Formerly Reserve Bin) 2019

Pithy and evenly paced, this flavoursome and textural riesling has a vibrant perfume of white flowers, lime juice, pear and green apple skin. Round juicy, it moves with length and shape over a powdery spine towards a lingering savoury finish of lime, lemon and refreshing acidity.

17.9/20 92/100 Drink 2027-2031

Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay 2018

Delicate aromas of white peach, apple and creamy vanilla oak precede a smooth, round and creamy palate whose relatively simple presence of fruit is delivered over an emphatic chalkiness and wrapped in clean, refreshing acids. Just too simple and under-fruited for a higher score.

16.6/20 88/100 Drink 2020-2023+

Penfolds Reserve Bin A Chardonnay 2018

Delicate scents of grapefruit, peach and vanilla oak backed by suggestions of cinnamon and charcuterie meats precede a palate whose forward presence of fruit dries out quickly, extends in rather a thin, clipped fashion over a bath salt-like minerality towards a dry, refreshing and pithy finish. Underrepresented in the fruit department for a higher rating.
16.8/20 89/100 Drink 2020-2023+

Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay 2017

Elegant, shapely and very restrained, this long, precisely focused and spotlessly clean chardonnay has a creamy, faintly nutty bouquet of white flowers, white peach, apple skin and pear backed by a whiff of custard creme. Underpinned by a fine, powdery extract, its long core of citrus and stonefruit flavour build richness and impact towards its refreshing and savoury finish.

18.5/20 94/100 Drink 2025-2029

Penfolds Bin 23 Pinot Noir 2018

An honest, spicy and tomatoey Adelaide Hills pinot whose minty expression of red cherries, redcurrants and cranberries reveals undertones of baked earth, cinnamon and cola. Supported by fine, slatey tannins, it’s more dry red-like than having much to say about pinot noir as a variety.

16.0/20 87/100 Drink v2020-2023

Penfolds Bin 138 Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre Blend 2017

Spicy scents of cassis, blackberries, blueberries and briar with undertones of spice and white pepper reveal nuances of restrained oak and fennel. It’s medium to fullish in weight, long and gentle, with a marginally hollow shiraz-driven palate supported by fine, drying tannins that become more firm and slatey towards the finish. It should flesh out over time.

17.6/20 91/100 Drink 2022-2025+

Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz 2017

Perfumed, floral and minty, this measured, medium to full-bodied shiraz reveals pristine flavours of cassis, mulberries and dark plums knit with fresh cedar/chocolate oak and fine, slatey tannins. Wrapped in a refreshing acidity, its lingering core of generous dark fruit finishes with hint of licorice.

18.2/20 93/100 Drink 2029-2037+

Penfolds Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz 2017

A fine, medium to full-bodied shiraz that might not have much to do with the Penfolds brand, but is nevertheless a charmingly smooth and gentle wine whose brightly lit cranberry, redcurrant and blood plum fruits are deftly knit with tight-grained vanilla, creamy and cedary oak and fine, pliant loose-knit tannins. There’s a subtle presence of mint and dried herbs that reflects the coolness of the vintage.

17.9/20 92/100 Drink 2029-2037+

Penfolds Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz 2017

A measured, very elegant and evenly paced expression of this wine whose sweetly oaked and unusually floral perfume of violets and small red flowers, dark cherries, cassis and blood plums reveals a whiff of dark chocolate. Its vivacious, faintly sour-edged flavours of black and blue berries knit seamlessly with tight-grained oak, finishing supple and gentle with a lively acidity.

18.6/20 95/100 Drink 2029-2037+

Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Although relatively simple and uncomplicated, this is an honest, elegant cabernet whose sweet, slightly confectionary bouquet of red berries, cassis and creamy vanilla oak overlies nuances of red cherries and dried herbs. It’s long and smooth, with generous red berry/cherry fruit knit tightly with creamy cedar/vanilla oak, finishing with freshness and balance.

17.7/20 92/100 Drink 2029-3037

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2017

Polished, measured and evenly paced, this generously flavoured and classically robust 389 reveals a fiery, earthy, bouquet of red berries, blood plums and sweet vanilla oak overlying suggestions of dark olives and roasting pan drippings. Its deep core of black, red and blue fruit drives long and earthy over a firmish spine of fine, crunchy tannins, easily carrying its handsome but artfully balanced oak. Although already approachable and with no hard edges, it’s a long-term classic.

18.9/20 96/100 Drink 2037-2047

Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2017

It takes time to unfold, but this smoky and faintly sour-edged shiraz reveals a spicy bouquet of briary redcurrants, dark plums, baked earth and roasting meat juices backed by scents of dark flowers and nuances of cinnamon and nutmeg. Fullish to medium in weight, its deep, meaty core of black and red fruits extends over a firm, crunchy backbone of mineral tannins, finishing with length and drive.

18.7/20 95/100 Drink 2029-2037

Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2017

Handsomely oaked but willowy and stylish, this brightly lit, smooth and elegant shiraz unfolds a pristine, floral bouquet whose scents of violets, blueberries, cassis and mulberries are knit with creamy oak, fiery hints of cinnamon and herbal suggestions of mint and menthol. There’s a bloody, meaty quality that knits artfully with the lavish, faintly smoky new oak on the palate, as its deep, lustrous core of fruit paces itself seamlessly down a fine, dusty spine of drying tannins, finishing with freshness, focus and length.

19.2/20 97/100 Drink 2037-2047+

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz Cabernet Blend 2016

An old school shiraz that needs time to settle into shape and style. Earthy, meaty and spicy, its evolving bouquet of red fruits, raisins and currants reveals notes of cinnamon and clove. It’s long and briary, with deep blackberry and dark plum flavours driving over fine, firmish tannins, culminating in a mineral finish with a lingering suggestion of roasting tray juices. Forget it for at least a decade.

18.5/20 94/100 Drink 2036-2046

Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2015

Lustrous and perfumed, with an arrestingly pure and heady bouquet of translucently clear dark plums, blackberries, cassis and dark cherries overlying notes of dark chocolates, bouquet of garni, roasting meats and cedar. It’s both sumptuous and stylish; an artfully modern shiraz whose explosively flavoured, sour-edged fruit suggests the meaty, five spice and deeply layered qualities of old Puer tea. Extending with exceptional drive and shape over a firmish spine of fine, crunchy tannins, it’s artfully balanced, wrapped in a lively acidity and set for the long haul. Reminiscent of the exceptional Granges from 1991 and 1994.
