With the first vineyards being planted in Bendigo during the Gold Rush in 1856, the Mediterranean climate and earthy Victorian terrain have resulted in big hearty red wines. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are the primary varietals grown in the area comprising 86% of production, with some wineries cultivating Italian designer varietals such as Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Zinfandel as well as companion varietals to make up Bordeaux-style blends.
