Merlot is a dark blue-coloured wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines with strong historic ties to Bordeaux and the southwest of France. Merlot is now widely planted in wine regions across the world and is also one of the most popular red wine varietals in many markets.
Food Pairings: Merlot provides lots of options and does better with heavy sauces than the big tannic Cabernet Sauvignon. The ample acid structure does surprisingly well with tomato based dishes as well. Strongly flavoured poultry and fish also compliment Merlot.
