Nero d'Avola (“nair-oh-da-vo-la” also known as Calabrese) is the most important and widely planted red wine grape variety in Sicily which translates as “black grape of Avola”. Nero d'Avola has historically been considered a blending variety, only recently emerging as a trendy mono-varietal. The grape variety is also grown in parts of Australia. Food pairings: Rich dishes that will be balanced by the tannins and high acidity such as Osso Bucco, Spicy Indian dishes and Game meat.
