Sauternes is a French sweet wine known for its distinctive, highly concentrated flavour. It is made from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle grapes in the Sauternais region in Bordeaux, France. With limited plantings and a low production rate, Sauternes are a highly sought after sweet wine. With syrupy lingering sweetness and a dash of acidity, it can also include notes of stone fruit, honey and nuts.
Sauternes are best served with foie gras, salty and spicy foods. It also pairs well with seafood, roasted chicken or Asian dishes. Sauternes is an excellent cheese wine pairing well with blue and hard cheeses.
